Re: 25 Mile Ride Placing

I have a different view of LD. While it is not a "race" in the sense that
a 50 mile ride is, I think riders are attempting to shorten the time in
which they finish a ride. There are more rules as to when a LD rider
completes the course (has to reach criteria as opposed to just crossing the
finish line on a 50 mile). I feel that riders of any distance are
interested in how they did compared with the rest of the pack, and I don't
think letting riders know how they did violates the concept by some that it
is a "training ride."

At our rides for the LD we still put the emphasis on not racing and give a
blanket for the horse with the top vet scores no matter where they finish in
the pack, as well as awards to the top five vet scores, but I remember when
I first got into the sport, I was always interested to know how I did
compared to the rest.

Those runners who enter a marathon race and plan to do it in 6 hours,
knowing that the top contenders are going to finish in under three hours,
are still interested in learning where they were in the pack, I don't see LD
riders wanting this information to be any different.
