Maybe *not* such a mystery after all <G>. Becky

("The KUHAYLAT" page 8, 9)
It was Ishmael to whom Jabrail (The angel Gabriel) was directed by God to
give the first desert horse. in the poetic translation of the pre-Islamic
Bedouin, it is reported, that Gabriel descended from space to earth while
Ishmael was asleep, but the man of the wilderness woke, when a "Wind-spout"
(A wind devil) whirled toward him, scorching the red sand with its feet,
scattering the dust with the blasts of its nostrils and screaming with
ferocity. Gabriel stayed the thunder-cloud with his commanding voice, and as
the fullness of the wild element gathered before him it began to condense
under his uplifted arms, and out of the obscure mass emerged one of the most
handsome creatures man had ever seen, prancing and running and caprioloing
about, it seemed to swallow the ground with it's thundering feet. <snip>
... Gabriel touched Ishmael's arm and said: "This noble creature of the dark
skin and "painted-black-eyes" ("Kuhayl") is a gift of the Living God to
serve you as a companion in the wilderness, and reward you, because you have
not defiled yourself with pagan gods, but remained in the faith of your
father Abraham. The Antelope with the 'black-painted-eyes' proved to be in
foal and produced a son and from these two horses (mother and son) all
Arabians descended.
