Re: ENDURANCE TRAINING QUERY?



This is one of my pet peevs amongst "endurance riders" (should be endurance lungers!). This is the lazy rider's easy way out of training, and they mustn't give me the "well I work long hours and don't realy have time to ride" story because then thay shouldn't be doing endurance! I leave home at 6am get back at 6pm and ride for two hours, sometimes in the pitch dark during winter and I know that most endurance riders have very similiar training regimes.
This is the same as the kiddy showing riders who stand at the entrance to the arena not having seen the pony since leaving home that morning, the groom arrives with the pony, mommy or daddy lift the little brat onto the pony they do their thing in the class come out hop off, pass the pony to the groom and off to the canteen/friends etc. with not even a pat to the pony! :-(

First off, as most of you are aware, I do not participate in endurance, although I find the sport itself interesting, from a stamina training point of view, as much of it can be related to my fitness programme for eventing.
 
Recently, I had a chat to a friend of mine who runs a livery yard which is primarily oriented to showjumping, with the odd DQ thrown in.  She said that she had a client who contacted her to board his three endurance horses.  He indicated to my friend that, as he was out of town "a lot", part of his requirements would be that his hroses be lunged for two hours per day.
 
 
Well, I platzed!!!!  My immediate reaction was : no, this is wrong, this is not endurance training, and it is bad for the joints for a horse to work on a circle for that long.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  Am I missing something?  Surely to God this can't do anything but damage the horse's joints and build up the wrong musculature?
