I am glad to hear quite a few people advocating ground work. I did months
of it with this mare (formal and informal) before riding her at all to build
trust and discipline. It made her very easy to ride out if she has a
companion - she will lead or follow other horses. She just gets nervous
going out alone.
Used parts of the earlier advice: trailered and rode her out alone for a
short ride this afternoon - past cows, over a creek, etc. Came home, tied
up for an hour and let her munch hay at the trailer, and then rode out from
home on a short ride. Doing a little of everything seemed to work out
really well. She was better about heading down the road away from her
buddies.
