RE: Bad Backs/Chronic Pain (Riders with...)
I ride in a ReactorPanel saddle now and I find that it is real shock
absorbing. I was less sore after my first 50 mile ride this last weekend
than when I did the same ride last year as a 25 miler. Also, I've been
cross-training.
Kenpo karate has helped me strengthen my torso and provides a lot of
stretching as matter of course, and since it's kinda fun, I'd rather do that
than hang out and pump iron at the gym. Works on coordination, too. I've
done Feldenkreis, TaiChi and Yoga, but like everything else in life I don't
have time to do everything. They all make me feel good, but I find that
TaiChi sticks with me better because it's so repetitive and soothing. So the
cross-training happens during the winter so that I have a good baseline for
myself. Don't have time for cross training during the summer anymore!
Visit my chiropractor everytime I fall off my horse, or whenever I get
"tweaked". Makes a big difference who your chiropracter is, too. Mine can
tell right when I walk in the door what is happening even before I can
figure out what is happening. Sometimes I see her every month, and then
I'll go for 6 months before I need her.
Make sure that your horse is moves straight! You might laugh, but my horse
kept on throwing me off to one side, and I had bad hip/sciatica/lower back
type problems all last year. Kept on seeing my chiropractor. So,
corrective shoeing, chiropractic for the horse, new saddle, longe work and
having someone else less crooked than I ride the horse for awhile, while I
took lessons on a "straight" horse made a whole lot of difference in keeping
my back comfortable.
So, just hope that I don't have any more of these issues for awhile. Last
year was a real drag!

Subject: RC: Bad Backs/Chronic Pain (Riders with...)
I'm doing some research to find out what riders with chronic pain or
injuries do to keep riding. Need feedback on what (besides lots of
painkillers) works for you-exercise (what type), stretching, physical
therapy, chiropractic, massage, Feldenkrais, Pilates, whatever you do. Can
you REPLY ALL, so I'm sure to get it?
