FW: Crisis in access to HEADWATERS Forest
Connie Berto asked me to forward this message:
--------
Riders in northern/central California, please read this. Karen Brooks
has been valiantly battling the planned closure of a favorite riding
area, site of many endurance rides. Now we have our chance to speak at
a public hearing. Please, attend one of the meetings listed below OR
email the BLM at address provided below. I suggest a basic two sentence
message: "My name is ______, I live in _______ and I am a taxpayer.
I am strongly in favor of planned public access for hikers, horsemen, and
bicyclists in Headwaters Forest!" Thanks in advance, Connie Berto

HEADS UP ALERT ON HEADWATERS
GET INVOLVED, SHOW UP AND SHOW SUPPORT FOR HORSE RIDERS!!! Come to
Eureka Inn on Tuesday, June 13th at 5:30 pm for preview and the public
scoping meeting starts at 6 pm. The meeting format: up to 12 diverse
groups and organizations will make short presentations to a general
assembly, sharing their vision for the Headwaters Forest "Reserve".
After these presentations, the general assembly will randomly divide
into four smaller discussion groups to provide individual input.
The "goal" of these meetings is to consider everyone's suggestions. All
comments will be recorded and considered in the context of the
legislation that authorized the Management Plan. For more information,
background documents or to provide comments on the Web, visit:
www.ca.blm.gov/arcata/headwaters.html or email headwatersplan@att.net.
Other meetings will be held:
a.. San Francisco Fort Mason Center, Landmark Building A -Tuesday,
June 20th
b.. Sacramento Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 6151 H Street,
Bruno Room -Thurs, June 22nd.
Rally horse people, bike riders, etc. to show up and be considered!
The goal of Headwaters is to not allow access and turn it into a nature
preserve or reserve. Nearly one half of BILLION DOLLARS was spent to
not log old growth redwoods and now the public, WE THE PEOPLE, can not
be trusted to use it wisely. THIS IS OUR ONLY CHANCE TO BE HEARD, SHOW
UP IN NUMBERS!
Contact horse groups and riders in your area and inform them to get the
word out. Contact national associations to help spread the word. All
types of recreation, including horseback riding, should be considered
and included in the General Plan. This property already has miles of
logging roads that biologists have determined to be erosion worthy and
not a problem. Yet BLM wants to remove all to deny access and return
the land to a pre-human state.
Over 80,000 people live within 10-12 miles of Headwaters, how realistic
is it to deny immediate residents and the American people access?
Roughly 1,500 of 7,500 acres is Old Growth Redwoods, this is not an
extensive area of land that needs complete and absolute protection.
