Uh, wrong emotion. Try amazement sprinkled with a little annoyance. (I'll curtail
my use of exclamation points from here on out so as to not appear angry.)

Bette, you've contributed nothing of substance to the topics at hand (amazement),
yet you felt compelled to write something anyway (annoyance).

This whole "state" thing has me thinking; our anonymous poster said early on in
his/her story that the RM noted that she was from a certain unnamed state; could
this be one of those regional things?

I'm lucky to be in an area where, at the most, there are two rides going on
within hauling distance on any given weekend during ride season. The sanctioning
clubs in the Grest Lakes region seem to take pains not to schedule conflicts.
This means that the experienced ride vets aren't spread too thin. Even if a vet
with no ride experience vets a ride, the vet likely specializes in horses, or at
least large animals. TB and Standarbred racing are both so popular here that we
are blessed with having veterinary professionals accustomed to looking at equines
and equine athletes. Maybe experienced vets are spread too thin in some regions.
Too bad we don't know where the poster is from or where the ride took place so we
could explore this meanigfully.

Referees in any game have a tremendous impact on the final outcome. Referees
exist in games like basketball, football, etc. to enforce rules and prevent
injury (the latter is the usual result of the former) Ride vets are the referees
of these distance riding games we play with our horses. An intregral, and
occasionally frustrating part of the game.
