Rabies
A horse just down the road from me was diagnosed with rabies this
year, and we have had several cases of possums and even a rabbit!
that attacked children while playing in their yard. A friend of mine
described an incident with a probable rabid coon last year. As she
drove down the road, she noticed a coon siiting, rather confused in
the middle of the road. She stopped the car near it and opened
the door when it dashed directly at her! As she began to pull
forward it attempted to bite the car tire. My vet says that these
stories are not uncommon and suggested that everyone stay clear of
apparantly wild animals that are wandering in the road. These
animals are often showing very aggressive behavior, consistent with
Rabies. I hate to drive past animals that look like they might be
injured, but I can't risk attempting to help them either.
