clipping summer coats

I will be attempting the Old Dominion 50 and with the heat and humidity am 
considering clipping some of the summer coat. I assume the top of the horse 
should be left alone to prevent sun burn. Do you do a trace clip or what? Do 
you clip the legs or not? How close, I think a #10 blade does 1/16 of an 
inch. Thanks.
