I've used the same stuff on pups that we brought home from the stables to
adopt. Since they were small and 40% fleas by weight, I just popped them
into a carton and sprayed them, then shampooed and rinsed VERY well. Clean
dogs, no bugs, and one of them is still with us 13 yrs later, so it couldn't
be too lethal.

You can get it at the drug store, I think RID is
