I would recommend you join AERC.  It will not cost you as much as $60 to join 
initially.  There is a sponsored discount for first time membership.  I've 
looked through the Endurance News and can't find anything about membership 
costs (that needs to be corrected), but it is much less than $60.  It won't 
take very many rides to equal your membership fee, at $10 per ride for a 
non-member.  And besides, there are numerous benefits to being a member.  
AERC as a group of some 5,000 members throughout the U.S. and Canada lends 
some clout to the equestrian interests in this country ... trail preservation 
and the like.  The more members, the more clout.  And there's the pride in 
belonging, the record keeping for yourself and horse, and the educational 
opportunities afforded by the Endurance News and the lectures and seminars at 
the convention.  Go for it!
