Rabies

Several years ago when Paul was a fairly new DVM he saw a dog who the owners 
described as choking on something.  Paul examined the dog and said he had the 
strangest feeling and ask if the folks would leave the dog at the clinic so 
he could watch it?  When he had come onboard at that clinic he had mentioned 
to the owner that it might be a good idea to have the entire staff take the 
Rabies prevention series but it was expensive and vetoed.  So he contacted 
the county health dept. and was told that there had not been a case of Rabies 
in absolutely years.  The next morning when Paul checked on the dog it was 
salivating heavily and exhibited several other signs so they called the folks 
and put the dog down.  It tested positive for Rabies.  The law in that county 
was Rabies shots every three years and these dogs were in the last half of 
the third year!!!  The other two dogs belonging to the family were put to 
sleep and EVERYONE who had come in contact with the dog went through the 
entire Rabies prevention series.  Paul said it was not pleasant and turned 
out to be very expensive for the owner of the clinic.
Our county just went to the three year shots but I will only do two and the 
horses are always vaccinated for Rabies.  It is really cheap insurance for an 
always fatal disease.  Lovell
