Brand Inspections and Import Permit Requirements for Montana

2002 Fort Howes (last year)
ride results and coverage

Ashland, Montana . Since 1997 the rides have been held at the Circle Bar Ranch, 20 miles South of Ashland, Montana. The rides loop through the Stevens' property and long out into the Custer National Forest. Much of the course passes interesting rock formations and follows Native American trails and game trails.. No part of the trail is paved. The rides include 100-mile, 50-mile and 25-mile rides.

Fort Howes Endurance Ride offers an excellent venue for those that are new to the sport of distance riding as well as those that are veteran riders. Rich in history, the trails wind through the Custer National Forest and privately owned land. Base camp is located on a working cattle ranch that has been in the family since 1883.

Brand Inspections and Import Permit Requirements for Montana

1. All out of state horses must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and negative Equine Infectious Anemia test, current within 12 months of import.

2. Import Permits are required on all horses imported into Montana. Permits must be obtained by the veterinarian issuing the Veterinary Inspection Certificate within 10 days of arrival into Montana. Permits may be obtained by calling (406) 444-2976 day or night, and there is no charge for the import permit.

3. A current brand inspection certificate must accompany all horses from the state of origin to the destination. It is recommended that you obtain "Lifetime" Brand Inspections from the brand inspectors in your home state. Individuals who do not have "Lifetime" inspections on their animals, who originate from states that do not issue "Lifetime" inspection or originate from non-brand inspection areas, will be required to obtain a Montana Brand Inspection Certificate before removing their horses from the state. A brand inspector will be here to issue one.

4. Pets traveling with their owners (dogs, cats & ferrets) and not destined for a pet store or for change of ownership must have a current rabies vaccination certificate and health certificate with them. None of these animals are permitted entrance from any federal, state, county or municipal RABIES\QUARANTINE AREA except upon a permit from the MONTANA State Veterinarian prior to shipment.

Participants' veterinary inspection and brand inspection certificates may be checked upon arrival by a Montana Department of Livestock Inspector for compliance.

VIOLATION OF MONTANA IMPORT AND BRAND INSPECTION LAWS IS A MISDEMEANOR AND IS SUBJECT TO A CITATION AND FINE.
