Beet Pulp 'Fun'
First, a few adventures with beet pulp. A friend of mine called me panicked
one day thinking her horse was very sick. The vet was already on the way
but she thought she may need some additional help (she lives alone on a
farm). Her horse was forming at the mouth and nose buckets of snot and
coughing!!. We managed to get him in the barn by the time the vet arrived
but he was already much improved. The vet did all the vital showing no
problems and 10 minutes later he was just fine. Come to find out he had
gotten into a bag of shredded beet pulp and obviously took several large
mouth fulls with this reactionion. I was very glad I was there because
several months later I was lent a horse for a ride and gave him some
grain/beet pulp mix. I did wet the slop down but it was not soaked. Come
to find out this horse had never had beet pulp before and he inhaled the
bucket with some of the same results. Lucky it was minor and only lasted
about 10 minutes but if I did not know what was going on I would have
'freaked'. BTW I now own the first horse and he eat beep pulp every day, we
just started him slowly.
