Hey, Karen!  I did exactly the same thing with my youngster (5 yo) this ride 
season and  am very happy with the results.  As you point out, he learned to 
take care of himself BEFORE there was a chance of his getting into trouble 
and his very immature little mind needed the time.  We'll move up to 50's 
later next season.  To me this is exactly what LD is for -- not for racing -- 
for bringing along new horses and riders.  Good post!
