Re: HORSE 37 YEARS OLD

Maggie,
Rice bran IS expensive, and we have phased it out here. Purina Athlete is
also expensive, but better balanced and more palatable, while otherwise
comparable to good rice bran products--which I had to disguise in ANY number
of ways to get the guys to eat the stuff--added molasses, carrots, apples,
begging "PLEEEEaze just eat it, it's good for you..." Typically they get
athlete as a supplement when I have trouble keeping them at their optimum
weight. We have a 17 year old Egyptian gelding that just tends to be skinny,
anyway, and when he is working a lot, he poops out when underweight
(surprise, surprise). I've had really good luck with feeding him equine
senior with extra athlete (almost ten pounds a day--which adds up fast, as
far as cost) soaked alfalfa cubes, plus all the grass he can eat on full
time pasture....his teeth are fine, no parasite problems...Our vet just says
he has the metabolism of a hummingbird :/
