I've never had a problem in mud, grass, slick hills, etc. Since we do not
boot the rears, horse's don't seem to have any trouble. We have done over
2000 miles this year alone in multi-day rides this way. Our horse's do well
with this method. We don't like pads and we have never needed to us them.
On the Outlaw Ride you ride about 40 miles on slick rock and the boots help
grip the sand stone. The rears help us grip in the mud areas up steep hills
and mountain trails.
So sorry to disagree but if the wheel ain't broke..... don't fix it!:)
