Re: RC: Fw: Fwd: RC: Buying a horse/WARNING
Wuhl, I'm not Betty, but I did post about the Andy/ArabX foal deal that went
bad...
I have such a cross in my barn right now and she is fabulous. She has the
endurance of the Arab (although she takes more after the heavy Andy side
physically) but with a "cooler-blooded" personality. I'm already a big
believer in ArabX's (sorry all you purists) as I take guests out on my
horses frequently and, IN MY EXPERIENCE, straight Arabs dislike being
"shared." Nikki is the closest thing to a "dude" horse that I will have on
the place. She literally "balances" her riders if their seat isn't quite
there. She is bold but gentle. She has a collected canter like a
merry-go-round ride. On the other hand, I can take her out alone (never been
herdbound) all day and burn up the miles. When I first got her, I took her
up in the mountains, shoeless, and we did a spontaneous 12-mile rocky loop.
Drawbacks: An easy keeper who is constantly on the lookout for food. She has
a heavier frame than an Arab and I wish her legs were longer. If I was
breeding for this type of cross, I would choose a taller Crabbet or a finer
Egyptian, rather than the heavier Polish princess that Nikki's dam was.
Watch out for Andy studs with long backs, also. And please! Breed for
personality as well as pedigree and conformation. We don't need any more
pissy, cranky but well-papered animals on this earth, IMHO. ;-}
