eating
I'm new to ridecamp but hey if we are talking about eating....We moved
to a place with 30 acres of pasture, which I love, as almost all our
horses are in their own little herd. We had tons of wild oats which they
have been feeding on since summer and become quite fat---actually
borderline obese, but how do you monitor them in pasture? Anywho, since
they exercise up and down the hills, I didn't worry. Their coats are
really shiny and their body is rounded (no hay belly) and their hooves
look great! Soooo I keep expecting to have to feed them---19 horses
should have demolished the oats by now---but they are still fat!
Mystery? Well, in that pasture are almond trees----which are now very
well pruned. The vet was here and told me my horses looked great!
Especially the pregnant mares in pasture---two things--some of them are
geldings and the rest weren't bred this year due to our move. I asked
him if almonds were good for horses and he replied"the deers sure like
them".
Sooo, are almonds good for horses---and what pray tell do I supplement
them with? This is a first for me. My horses are used to alfalfa and
forage. Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks.
Bette
