What an unmitigated tragedy for the man, his family, the two competitors and 
for the sport of endurance. If the account is accurate (and corroborated by 
other eyewitnesses), then the riders should by all means be held responsible 
for assault, just as if they had been driving a car. It is not excusable 
just because they were involved in a race; they had to have been aware that 
the conditions surrounding the event weren't as secure as a conventional 
race track. This account is disturbing for its overall potential to damage 
the reputation of distance racing, especially at a time when many public 
land facilities are considering whether endurance is safe enough to be held 
on their trail systems.
