Eating the leaves off of the oak trees can cause tannic acid poisoning too.
My mule ate 1/2 a tree the night before the Desert Pines 100.  I wasnt aware
of the tannic acid problem.  By 50 miles out she was a really hurting.  I
told the vet what she had done the night before and he said that was what
was wrong.  Apparently the oak leaves passing thru her system kind of set
her gut on fire.  You can bet that next weekend (Desert Pines 100 again)  I
will NOT park next to any oak trees again.      gesa n clovis
