Basically if you can't get to Taos a good number of weeks before you
ride to acclimatize your horses, you should just go and ride! One of
the many advantages horses have is the ability to release more red blood
cells from the spleen at need - as I understand it, this seems to
operate for horses at high altitudes. Of course you will be keeping an
eye on your horses' reactions, but they should be fine.
You will probably have more of a problem than your horses if you aren't
used to altitude. Make sure you drink plenty of water while you're up
there & take it easy if you feel dizzy. Lif
