The 17th Swanton Pacific 100 will be off at 5:30 AM Saturday following
the 5 AM start of the 100 mile Ride and Tie held over the same trail.
This year will also have the IAHA National Endurance Ride at the same time
with two divisions - Arabian and Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian with over $10,000
in IAHA Breeders Sweepstakes prize money available to enrolled Breeders
Sweeps horses. There is also a gelding incentive.
Some of the history for this ride comes from the ride information
homepage at
http://www.homestead.com/AERCRides/files/Swanton_info.htm
along with directions to the ride, VC info, and more
***** From the web page created by Linda Cowles and with information
by Barbara McCrary.
Logging, lumber, and forest products have been a part of the industry of the
Swanton area since well back into the 1800's, and trains played an
important part in that industry. In mapping out our ride in its first year,
1983,
we found we were passing through three areas with railroading history: the
Pescadero Creek watershed, where Santa Cruz Lumber Co. used locomotives to
haul huge logs into their sawmill at Waterman Gap; the Little Creek
watershed, where San Vicente Lumber Company's logging shay struggled up
ten-percent grades; and the Swanton valley, where the Ocean Shore
Railroad terminated its track northbound from Santa Cruz.
The name Swanton Pacific comes from a railroad built by our late neighbor
Al Smith, using a 84-year-old steam engine on a narrow-gauge track laid
along part of the old Ocean Shore route. All but the Swanton Pacific have
long since passed into history The 100 mile SP started in 1983 and grew
out of the earlier Castle Rock 50 and Big Creek 70 - with Barbara
and Lud McCrary taking over the management of Castle Rock in about 1975.
The ride is a tough one with almost 12,000 feet of ups and downs
over the course. It is held every year in August - this
year following the PAC by three weeks and Tevis by 5 weeks. The ride
is planned for nearly the full moon and the scenery should be beautiful
in both day and night.
The ride is held in a beautiful area near the Pacific ocean in
the Santa Cruz mountains between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, CA -
south of San Francisco. The area has steep cliffs dropping to
the beaches, mountains next to the ocean going up 2400 feet,
redwoods 8 feet in diameter, - with great trails to ride. There
are wild pigs and deer in the forest. The fog rolls in off the
ocean at night and is still there to greet you in the morning.
It's neat - beautiful country to see and to ride.
The 70+ preliminary starters are listed at the end of this
first note. They include riders from California, Colorado, and
Washington this year. One of the R&T teams comes from Utah.
Some of the entries to note include Heather B. and Red - winners
of the Haggin Cup this year, Kathy Thompson on
Zane Grey, Susan and Dennis Summers, Jazon Wonders(8th at Tevis
but different horse here), Hal Hall, Tony Benedetti(6th at Tevis -
different horse), and of course - Kathy Webster - the gal that
rode last year with the fracture of her wrist... Lari Shea had
to drop out at the last minute so we will miss seeing another of
her great Orlovs - 7th, 24th, and 34th at PAC.
The trail starts out near sea level and rises to 2400 feet in the
first 16 miles. There is a section called "kneeknocker" for the
obvious reason - but here it is redwoods that hit your knees...
The first vet check(VC) is at 34 miles with water provided by
Lud at the 16 mile point. The criteria at all the VCs was
68 pulse and 48 respiration last year but riders seem to
be asking for lower criteria so the vets may do this - with the group of 5
vets headed by Roger Bruce of Hollister this year. Melissa Ribley is one of
the vets - riding at Tevis this year, then Chuck Kessinger of Santa Cruz -
he just rode at Fireworks, Bob Dieterich of Cromberg
(near Quincy), and Diana Hassel of Davis. On the trail they offer treats:
carrots for horses, candy, fruit, soft drinks for the riders. There are hot
showers available after the ride. These are a lot of nice extras
for a tough ride...
Last year two women vets from the East coast competed in the R&T on Becky
Hart's great Rio. They will return this year to compete on Ken Cooks Rocky
because Becky says Rio is retired from 100 milers at 22...
It should be a great ride on saturday August 28 with coverage on the
internet. We will do our best to provide up-to-date coverage between
Linda, Barb, Mike, and whoever else we can get to help.
During the ride - there will be updated web coverage at
http://www.homestead.com/Swanton99/files/Swanton_Ride_Board.htm
