I'll toss in my two cents worth here I guess, since I spent a lot of
time working on diesels. If I was to build my dream truck, I'd have to
put together my own frame. But, as far as the engine goes, it's either a
Cummins, Detroit, or Cat, nothin' else. Good engines that have proven
themselves with the over-the-road guys (and gals) for a long time. Of
course, there is always the lively debate, so my engine choice is just my
opinion.
But, consider that if an over-the-road tractor doesn't get at least 500,000
miles on the engine, the rumor mill goes haywire (at least with the folks
I worked with). Tolerances and quality live up to a higher standard. I would
congratulate Ford if they have finally taken the inititive to offer a better
engine than what was available "back in my days", but I think I would still
be hesitant. "My Days" were only seven years ago.
As far as the Jake (Jacobs) brake, that is a tradename.... there's also the
"C" brake too! When you get that diesel of your dreams, it'll last forever
(practically) only if you take good care of it. Oil changes, filters, etc. are
going to require more frequent changes because of the diesel's tight
tolerances. Gazzillion other things to consider as well... Hmm. Well,
Have fun ridin' (whether it be in a truck or on the horse)!
