Part of the normal digestive process is to remove several gallons of water
from the slurry in the large colon to produce normal fecal balls in the small
colon. This water is the "reserve" that the forage-filled endurance horse
has. No slurry, no reserve. Of course, if he was not allowed to drink during
the course of the competition, it still would not be enough, but it sure goes
a long way toward stablizing hydration and keeping the horse in a more steady
state.
