Re: horse weight -- corrected formula
Well, I guess I can just toss the page in the logbook.
From "The Horse", second edition, 1990
by Evans, Borton, Hintz, and Van Eck,
W.H. Freeman and Co.
(using, again ^2 and ^3 to represent superscripted powers
H is heartgirth in inches
L is length in inches
W is weight in lbs
p. 296 (general formula)
W = H ^2 x L / 241.3
(which I believe is what I posted before).
However, from p. 140 , the following should be correct and my transcription
errors obvious:
(Males)
W = ( .14475 x H )^3
(Females)
W = (.14341 x H)^3
(Colts to 5 yo)
W = (.1387 x H + 0.4)^3
(Fillies to 5 yo)
W = (.1382 x H + 0.344)^3
For your mare I would then get
.14341 x 71 = 10.18211
10.18211 x 10.18211 x 10.18211 = 1055 lb
Gayle Ecker's constant (330) is for sure going to be based on
more recent and more thorough research than my somewhat
dated text:
71*71*59 / 330 = 901 lb
