Well, maybe, but it's a little loosey-goosey to be talking about the power of
genetic predisposition without describing the actual genetic
effect--hyperthyroid, for example. I seldom encounter a horse than cannot be
persuaded, one way or another, to consume enough feed to support a pretty
heavy workload. On the other hand, I've seen hundreds and hundreds that were
poor keepers in the wrong hands. Worm them, fix their teeth, eliminate their
sorenesses, put them to work, and they'll eat. I have guys making small
fortunes at the racetrack with this single "trick". It is my best guess that,
should endurance riding ever become genuinely competitive, that trick would
work here as well--underfed athletes don't do very well in any other sport,
human or equine.
