Numbers on the horse's butt.
I found, accidentally, that the best way to get the numbers off my
horse's butt was to start before the number was put on. The day
before I trailered to a ride I groomed him excessively with showsheen.
At the time, my horse was so ragged from the fly allergy battle, that
I was trying anything to make him presentable. When the number
magically came off within the next few days, I decided to remember it.
Give it a try. Sure is cleaner than baby oil and safer than WD-40 or
gasoline. Personally, I kind of like leaving the numbers on because
I'm the only endurance rider in an Arabian Show Barn.

I'm sure someone has some found a great way to remove the numbers
after a ride - short of scrubbing all the horses hide off or using
some toxic chemical. My neighbor actually told me to use gasoline and
he was serious. So anyone with a handy little hint - please share it.
