unruly riders
In a quick look through the rules I did not see anything about what I will call "Conduct
Unbecoming". It seems that in most sports there is some sort of rule that covers this and
if I have missed one in the AERC rule book my apology.
My thought on this would give ride managers the right to withhold all prizes, awards, and
mileage, pending a review by the BOD or committee, to any rider who was abusive to
people or horses at their ride. This would apply to "abusive behavior" by a rider or crew
member only and should not be used to enforce other rule infractions. It is understood
that disputes will happen but that they must be handled in a civilized manner. Shunning is
a very effective method of behavior modification but in some cases is not an option that
ride management can use.
I believe it is time for the AERC board of directors to take a stand and state very clearly to
all that abusive behavior will not be tolerated in this sport !
