"Brand inspection" just means inspecting the horse for ANY kind of brand (the
old-fashioned burn kind, the freeze-brand kind, or anything else they can
dream up) as well as markings, scars, general physical description, etc.  When
you get it done, they give you either a piece of paper (the temporary kind) or
a plastic card (the permanent kind) that basically just says that you really
do own the horse of such-and-such description.  The historical reason for
brand inspection (and branding, too, for that matter) is to be able to prove
ownership and help to deter theft.

We still see an occasional "hot iron" brand on horses, but mostly freeze
brands now.  "Hot iron" brands used to be common in Europe as well, and you
still see them on some of the Warmblood sorts of horses.
