Streaching down is not an uncommon thing as most people have
commented. I have had horses that did this to the extreme, such as
cantering with their noses on the ground. This behavior was not
sniffing, not simple streaching, it was an obvious effort to relieve
something the horse felt. I am not so sure as this was to release
neck and back muscles , but rather to release muscles in the croup
area. Both of the horses that did this to the extreme had regular
chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture but eventually ended up with
hind end lameness problems. One horse would also raise his head and
neck in the air while walking, like a person would do to get a "kink"
out of their back.
