I have to admit, I'm one of those who will normally post "privately" to
questions because of the potential for flame-mail. But I'm going to
bite the bullet, gotta be brave sometimes! <g>
This is what I do for crusties in the winter. Granted, we're not
knee-deep winter type weather out here, but it definitely gets chilly.
I ride at night so I have the same problem.
I bathe him down anyway! I have the luxury of having a portable butane
stove and as soon as I get back to the barn, I start heating up the tea
kettle. Before I had the stove, I brought up a cooler of very hot water
(which cooled somewhat when we were out riding). I would scrub him down
with tepid water with a stiff sponge/brush while not soaking him. The
reaaaalllly crusty areas I did soak until he was clean. A quick
scraping and a toweling off, then went on a polar fleece cooler and if
it was really cold, a wool cooler went on top of this. Then a brief
walk and then tied him in a stall (i.e. out of the wind) with a hay bag
and did barn chores while he dried off. I would walk him briefly
between chores just to keep his blood going. He'd usually dry fairly
quickly, an hour if it was pretty humid.
The only problem I've seen with leaving a horse with a crusty coat (and
I've done it often, believe me) is the salts left on the coat will
continue to dehydrate him. But on the other hand, of course, your
nicely scrubbed clean horse is going to roll when he gets turned out,
anyway. But at least the crusties are gone!
Good luck
Jen & the Sunman

Subject: how to clean a filthy winter coat?
Since I seem to be feeling chatty tonight, I'll ask another
question. :)
Thanks to a cold snap last week, Lakota has finally grown his
fuzzy winter
coat. Yesterday we went on a long ride, during which he
perspired quite a
bit, and brought up all the dirt buried in that fuzzy fur, which
combined
with the salty sweat to make filthy froth, which dried in the
cold wind to
near-cement by the time we returned to the barn.
Now, in the summer time I relish in hosing him down when he's
really nasty
(since that nice cool spray covers me too :), but now it's too
cold to
hose him down. I walked him until he dried, then brushed and
brushed and
brushed and brushed until my arms were falling off, but still
there were
several spots of near-cement in heavy-sweat areas that I could
NOT remove.
Does anyone have any great tips on removing this gunk? Or is it
okay to
leave it on and let him roll it off?
