<< Does anyone know what a hunter's bump or hump is? and if it will
effect the career of an endurance horse? >>
Hunter's bump is the term used to describe a dislocation of the sacro-iliac
joint and the resulting tearing of the sacroiliac ligaments. As in any back
pain, it's extremely painful. It will often look like hind leg lameness when
it's really in his back. Sometimes the horse will drag his hind toes and
shorten his stride.
It usually occurs when a horse has had a bad fall.
I, too have heard that it supposedly makes a better jumper out of horse...but
I find that hard to believe, having a bad back from a bad fall myself. If it
improves the horse's jump, it is probably from the horse learning to protect
himself while jumping with an injury, rather than an improvment in his
jumping style.
How will it affect an endurance horse's career? I have no idea. Every horse,
every rider, every injury, every ride is different.
