"dryland distemper" is another name for "pigeon fever" which is caused by a
bacterium named Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis; which causes abcesses
in the forechest lymph nodes (which causes huge swelling of the forechest
hence the name); abscesses can also occur along the ventral midline of the
abdomen and other areas too. it is typically seen in the late summer &
fall.... it can be very frustrating .... no vaccine available ....practice
the best fly control you can.

"Valley fever" is caused by a fungal organism, Coccidioides immitis. It
affects cattle, sheep, goats, and people! The spores are inhaled and the
infection settles in the lungs. I don't know if it is a problem in horses.
It is limited to certain areas, eg. the central valley of Calif.
