I'm just going to pass along a message; this isn't intended to start a
discussion on this topic. Here is a opportunity for you to do a good deed.

I talked recently with a couple people who have been interested in helping
get the horse transportation bill passed (i.e. the one to ensure that
slaughter-bound horses have humane treatment). They have become more
involved than they thought they would at the start. Tracy and Kelly Young
have a family and regular jobs, but they also have a place big enough to
keep several horses temporarily for adoption. Other volunteers come and
help take care of the horses they have bought from the New Holland Sale.
They are developing a very good reputation in this area for their care and
effort in providing adoptees. They also watch out for stolen horses.

They need some blankets for a few thinnish horses. If you have ANY old
blankets around that you'd like to get rid of, this would be a good place
for them. Of course, anything you could donate will help. The next thing
needed is used equipment (in useable condition) for riding or simple
training, for evaluation of horses which seem like they have been trained.
If you have this kind of thing, just send a care package directly to them.

Other information I learned: The horses they buy are usually those that it
would be inhumane to transport on the group slaughterbound truck. They may
not or will not survive the trip to the slaughterhouse, like babies (or
mares with foals), or skinnies. Sometimes the trip is going to be too long
without stopping or for water, or with too many aggressive horses. These
weaker horses are removed from the stressful situation, rehabilitated, and
given another chance to become useful as pets or riding horses. Those that
have very poor prognosis of survival are euthanized immediately. Adoptions
slow down with the approach of winter, and when I spoke to her there were
20 horses in their barn. There is a cost for adoption, usually the price
paid at the auction. They make surprise inspections after adoption. For
other details if you are interested, give them a call. Pass this message
along to your horse friends.
