Dryland Distemper

Hi everyone,

Well, we're experiencing another outbreak of Dryland Distemper here in the
southern Sierras. We had an outbreak about three years ago and now...IT'S
BACK!

For those of you not familiar with Dryland, it is, we believe, a bacteria
that causes an edema on the horses lower chest (between his front legs)
that ruptures and drains. This can last for a few days or, in the case of
my neighbor's horse, a year and a half! The horses feel crummy for a few
days and loses his appetite, but overall it's not life-threatening.

Has anyone else had experiences with dryland? The experts really don't know
too much about it. It seems to hit horses randomly (at least no one I know
can find a pattern). Anyway, we're trying learn as much as possible so that
we can effectively treat these guys. Right now, its with antibiotics but my
friend is going to try some homeopathic remedies.

All and any info would be appreciated! Thanks.
