First camping trip with horse coolers/blankets. Rode 5 hrs., cooled horses
out by walking, weather was in the 50's, so put coolers (polar fleece) on.
Took horses to standing stalls. When weather got colder later, (dropped
into the 20's). We took coolers off and put blankets on. The next morning
one of the horses had swelling in his legs (the other two did, but to a
much lesser extent). He also had very unusual "swollen pouches" which
developed in front of his girth line, in the armpit areas. They were very
sore, but also "lumpy" with some skin scaling. I use a neoprene girth
(placed and tightened correctly) and have never had another horse do this.
I wondered if it had something to do with the riding conditions (lots of
sand). Our other horses are always prone to armpit sores when we ride in
this area. I switched to a felt girth that day and the pouches decreased
in size (as well as the leg swelling). Could the cooler/blanket procedure
have contributed to the stocking up problem? Has anyone else ever
experienced these armpit pouches? They are still there now (after coming
home) and are scabing, scaling. I am treating them with an aloe medicated
cream. This horse also has what some people call "windpuffs". Can anyone
explain them to me?
Suggestions are welcome.
