I just finished reading the message about CTR v. endurance.
I was hoping to go to my first ride in the summer (1998) which would be a
25 (Novice) held by the Ontario Competitive Trail Riding Association.
You were talking
about points taken off for a horse's legs filling up -any ideas on
what would happen (points off?) if my horse has a permanent swelling
slightly above and behind his fetlock joint on his left hind leg. He
also has bone jacks in both his hocks which would make him badly fail
a flexion test, but which hasn't caused lameness to do date (I just
have to be really careful about warming him up and cooling him down).
He doesn't seem to have a problem flexing his legs on his own, but he
hops around when anyone tries to get him to hold either one of his
hind legs up. I bet I'm the only person who has to get their horse
to move over, shift their weight to the other leg and rest one leg
(so the hoof is off the ground, but still resting on the ground...the
way a horse stands at rest) in order to pick out their horse's
hind hooves. I have to get him tranquilized for the blacksmith to do
anything with his hind hooves, although he's a perfect angel to shoe
in the front. I don't think he would have any problem handling the
distance since I have often gone on long rides on my own with no
lameness showing, except for a slight shortness of stride on one
occassion which I monitored closely and gave him a number of days off
before slowly working back up to longer rides again. Any comments?
