Foxfire Fall
August 30, 1997 - Chinero, TX
There were no foxes but plenty of fire (and humidity) to greet the
riders of this year's Foxfire Fall ride. Ride Manager, Vonita Bowers,
did an excellent job of laying out and marking the trails and in what
may be a first for an endurance ride, all meetings started exactly on
time.
Six riders took to the trails for the 100 mile event. Betsy Reeves and
her 13 year old Half-Arab gelding, Karazanns Karisme +/ won in a time of
13:04. This is the fifth 100 mile win for Betsy this year. Jim Wiseman
from MO was second finishing just behind Betsy. Jim's horse Cyrano HC
was awarded BC for the ride. The TT was rounded out by Thomas Booth on
Ibn Taam Rud in 15:25, Mary Fields on Christian and Doyle Carraway on FD
Sundance who tied with the time of 15:44.
The 50 mile event started with 33 riders and ended with 27 finishers
despite the heat and humidity. This was a banner day for the
Barber/Zeigler clan. Junior Hillary Zeigler won her first 50 mile ride
by edging out grandmother Bobbie at the finish. While Hillary is known
for her manners and respect for her elders, she gave both her mother and
grandmother a run for it and showed that youth does sometimes prevail
over experience. Bobbie was somewhat consoled by the fact that this ride
was Kash's first after passing the 7000 mile mark at Timberon earlier
this year. While Lynn Zeigler had to settle for third she and Bab Sheba
were rewarded by receiving Best Condition for the ride. The TT was
rounded out by Shelley Bridges - Windswift Pharah, Tracy Webb Hoskins -
Fletch, Dolly Miller - GS Silverado, Jim Miller - JY Bengal Lancer,
Genie Wunderlich - Twister, Gail Fiebelman - HK Chavis and Laura
Stoicescu - Obsyssion.
The 25 mile Limited Distance ride was well attended with 41 starters.
DAF Bobbie Sox, ridden by Jennifer Noblin, was first to reach criteria
in a time of 2:41 from the field of 37 finishers. Best Condition was
awarded to Serr Rafin, ridden by Jenny Conway. Kristin Seymore, riding
Fire Pony, was first Junior with a time of 3:49. Kurtis [Mudman]
Kleffen kept his slim 5 mile lead over Jennifer Noblin in the TADRA
Limited Distance Mileage competition with his eighth place finish in a
time of 3:30.
