Morgans in endurance

I have to comment on this subject mainly because I rode the other
Morgan at the ROC and pulled at 50 miles. He was border-line, I
respect the vets judgement and it was nothing new to me. Kathy's
Morgan rode the edge for the entire ride and she worked REALLY hard
to finish. Both of these horses are super animals but I would not
call them endurance horses. My definition of an endurance horse is
not just ability to finish, but ability to be competitive. It is
not their color, my horse is bay, it is their genetic make up. Both
horses have years of base, thousands of miles, riders that know how
to ride them and still it was hard for them. They were bred to pull,
trot and last forever, not race 100 miles. Morgans are great horses,
absolutley the best for CTR, but they are not Arabs and never will
be. It is not fun to ride a horse on the edge like that, nor do I
think it fair to the horse. If you want to race, get an Arab, if you
want a sound, never say die, go through and over anything finisher,
get a Morgan. With 3600 miles, I am retiring him as a sound horse
from endurance and I am sure we have many more miles ahead of us.
