What happpend at Malibu?

I was looking through the most recent issue of the EN and upon perusing
the ride results noticed that this year's Malibu 50 had a top finishing
time of 4:14. more than 90 minutes less than last year's ride.

And I was curious if there is anybody on the list who went that can
explain this to me.

Was the course changed (don't try to convince me that all of this year's
horses were better than last years...especially since the top finishers
are many of the exact same riders...I just won't believe that).

Or was it the weather?

Malibu has notoriously been a "tough" ride with killer hills after the
lunch break. Was this aspect of this ride changed, and if so, is it a
permanent change, or will next year see the old Malibu back.

Am I the only one who is unhappy about the shortening (timewise) of the 50
mile endurance ride? A trend that I have noticed over the last 5 years
(it may have been going on for longer than that, but I haven't been around
to notice it).

Am I the only one who thinks that the apparent trend of making rides
easier (here I am speaking generically rather than about Malibu
specifically) is "ruining" the sport of endurance?

Am I crazy, is the trend entirely in my mind?
