electrolyte question

I have been to the archives and I am still not sure that I understand all
that I need to. Firstly, do you give electrolytes to a horse that is doing
a 25 miler or a 50 miler? Personally, I feel better if I do.
Anyway, my mare (The Witch) absolutely, positively refuses to allow me to
use the syringe type of electrolytes anymore. Soooo, I thought I would get
the type that you mix with feed and hopefully she would eat it and the
problem would be solved.
None of the electrolyte supplements mentioned in the archives is available
here locally. Actually, there's only 2 stores that carry any that you add to
feed. Most of them indicate that they be added to the daily ration. Well, my
mare doesn't get a daily ration. She is out on pasture and does not need
anything additional. Can you use this type of supplement on an 'as needed'
basis and will it "do the job?"
The one that I am leaning toward that I can get here locally is called
Stamina Plus. They make several types of supplements but they do have one
that is specifically only electrolytes. They also make the syringe type,
which I have used in the past but is now no longer an option. How necessary
is it to give electrolytes when doing 25 or 50 miles? I only have 2 more
rides this season (one this coming weekend) and do not have time to order
anything thru catalogs (especially with UPS strike!).
Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome.

PS. Loved the Tevis stories....both the riders and the pit crew!
