The endurance ride was on Saturday in the rain...the CTR the next day was
cancelled. And, YES, I have been to two rides in my life that HAD to be
cancelled. One had 6 inches of rain the night before and all the rivers were
too deep to cross. All the riders, vets and ride manager agredd and so we
all packed up and went home...The other was similar, except we didn't wake up
to our horses knee deep in water. We knew it had rained, but didn't know how
much. Well, the Corps of Engineers opened the dam to prevent flooding and
guess what??? The rivers and creek were DEEP!!! I knew the trail and was
abour 12th place at 20 or so miles when I can to a river normally 6 inches
deep and 5 feet across..it was now 6 feet deep and 50 feet across!!! So we
all turned back to find we couldn't cross where we had been...Found a local
house, called the rangers who got ahold of ride management (all at vet chekc
waiting for us). We rode 5 miles to the ranger station and took turns
holding horses whil we got ferried back to camp to try to unstick our
vehicles so everybody could get trailered back to camp...a day to
remember...that was 1987...
