Back in the days when I used to train Standardbreds, we had many a pacer that
would trot when out for his daily exercise. Not always true, but I soon
began to realize that a SOUND horse was more likely to trot and a hurting
horse pace...the diagonal movment of legs at the trot is evidently a bit
harder to do when there is any pain involved...conversly, a pacing horse is
able to AVOID some pain by pacing.

PS: Sitting behind rather than on top gives you a whole 'nother
perspective..one that if you were astute and paid attention to the same horse
day after day, would give you a fabulous picture of any changes due to subtle
problems coming on. I leanred a lot about efficiency of gat this way...
