I know Susan knows this ( or assume so) but there are a good deal of
endurance horses out there who were purchased from the racetracks
(arabian..quite a different scenario from TB from what I've read). Most
haven't raced as much but have been trained similarly. Most simply weren't
fast enough to be competitive, but were attractive to buyers for the "start"
(i.e. supposed "base" miles) they had. I haven't seen where they were any
better than a horse who was started with base miles at home..and usually had
to be re-trained in the sense that they were 1. Not used to rough terrain, 2.
On the bit too much and "racey" 3. too thin, not fed enough and not used to
be fed enough, hence for susceptable to "tying-up" while new owner trying to
put weight on. Just observations from a few ex-racing arabians now on trail.
