Linda - This discussion about rule 13 and the discussion of the effect of
cash prizes on our sport are good examples of how the world is changing.
For example, Tracy Ingram asked me if I thought ride managers should be
responsible for polling the AERC membership for its opinions before offering
a ride. She does not think that is necessary (or even possible). I think
it is the wrong question.
In the pre-'net world, feelings and opinions were there but
unexpressed, now they can be easily shared. Adding Truman's extremely
thought provoking comment about the change in goverment from representative
to participatory (i.e.referendums & propositions) means, IMHO, that everyone
in "management" or "government" - ride managers to AERC BOD now needs to be
aware that "the people are speaking." A revolution of sorts but not a
hostile takeover by any means. In fact, again IMHO, a telecommunications
age restatement of what representative democracy is all about. All of a
sudden, they can't avoid knowing how "the people" feel about an issue.
AND...IMHO a lot of the debate that used to be done by the AERC committees
is being done here by equally well informed and experienced people. We are
not going to wait for a committee decision, we want to be included.
It's a new world, folks. We 'netters have crossed the bridge. Part
of our mission is to teach those still behind how to deal with the new reality.

PS: I'm very interested but not knowledgeable, therefore I'm reading with
great interest what you, Truman, ti, Susan, etc. have to say. Please keep
it up so the rest of us can know enough about the subject to form an opinion.
