Psyllium EVERY DAY ???

I saw a reference to Psyllium being fed on a continuous basis.
Not only will this be expensive, It's not supposed to work.
I was told you must feed this subnstance in prescribed intervals with
intervalse where it is not fed at all. The reason is that bacteria will
develop in the gut to perform digestive actions on psyllium treating it as a
food stuff and thereby you will lose its natural cleansing ability which is
why your feeding it in the first place.
This product is derived from a seed and when ingested and exposed to moisture
becomes a gelatinous ball capable of attaching itself to debris such as sand
and continuing through the digestive tract. If you feed it every day, and the
bacteria develop to digest it, how can it continue through the tract cleaning
it. Although I may have presented a very elementary view of this substance, I
still believe your are NEVER to start a regimen of daily feeding Pysillium
over long periods of time.
My vet recommended one half cup building to one ciup when we were sure the
horse was eating it all ( only so we didn't needlessly waste any ) then three
weeks twice a day one cup each feeding, then stop for four weeks, then 5 days
repeat during the first of the month. Every month. Eventually I would stop
only because I purchased a horse from a sandy area and relocated him to a
non-sandy area. Whether a horse on a sandy area should continue this in some
form for life , I don't know, but I am certain you would not feed every day,
or possibly even weekly, for the life of the horse.
Check again with your vet.
