In a message dated 96-12-10 01:19:22 EST, you write:

<<
Character; integrity; work ethics; principles; love of animals;
empathy. What do these traits have in common? In most people they don't
change. They are values that make up each and every one of us. What I have
learned from people is that no matter what you throw at them, no matter
what comes their way, you don't change people. Those individuals who
treat their animals well always will regardless of their means. >>
Just a note - all of this is true...and to further the point, those who are
in this sport not for love of the partnershp of the animal nor for love of
the animal would now have even greater motivation to "ride 'till it hurts".
Whereas I can't change you and you can't change me, money has a way of
skewing the curve in many, many people. If you don't agree, just read the
headlines, watch the news and go to a Lakers game. A close friend just
signed a $6plus million contract with the Dodgers. He spoke privately with my
husband about how hard it was to turn down a bigger offer form another team
just to get to LA. He is the exception. He spoke of the general rule - the
ridicule he endured from certain former teammates who inferred that only an
idiot would "turn down a raise for principle". Sad, but there. Now, please,
reassure me that money won't change people. The next horse I sell may rely on
that assurance.
