cash prizes/publicity

Bambi described a winter triathlon and the effects of cash prizes and
publicity on it. My riding buddy and I have spent many a training ride hour
planning how we would film an endurance ride for TV. We even talked with a
professional film crew once. Our conclusion is that it could be done but
with great difficulty! As Bambi said, "tv sports are for wanna-be males,"
whose fantasies run to immediate fame and glory, not slogging through lonely
hours of grit, grime and pain.
I would love to see endurance on ESPN if the coverage emphasized how
well endurance horses are cared for and the contributions to knowledge about
horses the sport has contributed. Publicity and sponsor support do not have
to be linked and we should think about them as separate issues.
