When I lived in Colorado, I had permanent brand inspection papers on my
horses. Check with your state brand inspector for details about this if you
live in the West. Otherwise, you have to notify the brand inspector everytime
you go beyond a certain distance. There was a charge for brand inspections so
having a permanent one is a money saver. When you sell a horse (yes, even a
registered one) you need to have the animal brand inspected too. Even if it
doesn't have a brand.
I carry copies of my bills of sales and registration papers as well as the
Coggins and health papers at all times in my vehicle.
Here in Missouri, I have been told of people without neg Coggins papers
getting a $500 fine. One instance was while the drivers had stopped in a
truck stop to fill up and eat -- and ended up fined.
See you on the trails,
Cathy Adair
